The Controlled Substances Act is the United States federal statute, enacted in 1970, that establishes the framework for the regulation of medicines and other substances with potential for misuse. It sorts regulated substances into five schedules according to accepted medical use and potential for abuse, and it is administered by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Many of the medicines documented on this wiki are placed in one of its schedules; placement in Schedule I, the most restrictive, has historically curtailed research.
