The neuromuscular blockers are the medicines that cause muscle relaxation or paralysis by interrupting transmission at the junction between nerve and muscle. They are used alongside anesthetics to provide surgical muscle relaxation, a combination known as balanced anesthesia.
The neuromuscular blockers should not be confused with the centrally-acting muscle relaxants, a separate class that reduces muscle tone and spasm by acting on the brain and spinal cord rather than at the neuromuscular junction.
