Mescaline: A Global History of the First Psychedelic is a 2019 book by the historian Mike Jay, published by Yale University Press. It traces the history of mescaline and the peyote cactus from the earliest Andean cultures, through the Spanish conquest, the isolation of mescaline in 1897, and its twentieth-century use by psychologists, artists, and writers, to the role of peyote in Native American religious life. It is a modern secondary source on the history of the psychedelic phenethylamines.
