5-HT2C is a G protein-coupled serotonin receptor of the 5-HT2 family, signaling through Gq/11 proteins and phospholipase C, and is expressed almost exclusively in the central nervous system, where it contributes to the regulation of appetite, mood, and locomotor activity.[1] 5-HT2C agonism suppresses appetite and was the mechanism of the anorectic medicine lorcaserin, while 5-HT2C antagonism is one contributor to the weight gain associated with several neuroleptics.
