Richard Spruce (1817–1893) was an English botanist whose expeditions through the Amazon and the Andes produced some of the earliest European botanical documentation of ayahuasca and its source plants. His collections and field notes, gathered through the 1850s and published posthumously as Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon and Andes (1908), are a foundational record for the later ethnobotany of the DMT-bearing preparations.
