Oswaldo Gonçalves de Lima was a Brazilian scientist who, in 1946, isolated from the roots of Mimosa hostilis an alkaloid he named nigerine, the active principle of the northeastern Brazilian preparation known as the wine of jurema.[1] Nigerine was later shown to be DMT.
